FLYING SWINE MANIFESTO Modern entertainment is dominated by art forms, such as film and video, which are representations of events that have already occurred. In an attempt to compete with them, many theatrical productions have resorted to imitation, incorporating them into the play as design elements, transitional devices, even substitutes for the active execution of the text, resulting in a hybrid of the living present and the recorded past. The advent of computer-generated imagery has exacerbated this trend, particularly in the realm of audio production, so that it is rare to see a play that doesn't depend, in one aspect or another, on an artificial depiction of the material. FLYING SWINE is live action, immediate and unfiltered. Theatre is a medium of the present moment, created by living, breathing people in the immediate presence of a living, breathing audience. FLYING SWINE accentuates this immediacy by performing without the use of recordings or microphones. FLYING SWINE emphasizes the elemental ingredient which recordings lack: the shared experience of a moment in time by performer and audience. FLYING SWINE projects a natural voice. FLYING SWINE is accessible theatre. For thousands of years, human beings have gathered to take part in the mutual fulfillment of our hunger for visceral, intellectual, and spiritual nourishment. FLYING SWINE revels in the communal feast of the soul afforded by the theatrical event. FLYING SWINE strives to invigorate society by creating stimulating performance of the highest quality that is innovative, provocative, cathartic and fun. FLYING SWINE extends a welcoming invitation to the public to participate in the realization of works that speak to people of all walks of life at prices affordable to people of all walks of life. FLYING SWINE promotes artistic expression through the development of new works, curriculum based workshops with educational institutions, apprentice/intern programs, and community outreach programs. FLYING SWINE encourages the development of a healthy, flourishing culture in which the performing arts advance not only the practice of aesthetics, but civic progress and economic prosperity as well.
MISSION FLYING SWINE's mission is to transform the performing arts scene in the Hudson Valley into a vibrant source of creativity with fully produced plays of the highest quality. Our name symbolizes the union of elemental, earthy humanity with the instinctive need to feed and inspire the soul. Our goals include the establishment of Beacon as the cultural nexus of the Hudson Valley, combining our excellent local resources with talents from all around the world to create a synthesis of creative vitality and economic prosperity. Our goals include innovative programming as well. "Impork/Expork Productions" will be established with theatre companies in New York City, across North America and overseas, giving all concerned an opportunity to take part in an international cross-pollination of ideas. Collaborating with the established visual arts community of the Hudson Valley, FLYING SWINE aims to be the herald of Beacon, an ambassador for the arts, placing Beacon prominently on the map of international arts destinations. The key to achieving such goals is innovation. Working on the premise that perception is reality, FLYING SWINE challenges its audience to look beneath the surface, to recognize that things aren't always as they seem, that as our perception changes, so does the reality of our experience. To that end, our modus operandi is one of transparency, revealing the truth of what is taking place onstage not only through the work of playwright and actor, but also through innovative use of what we call technical exposition, or techsposition. Techsposition is the use of design elements to selectively expose technical aspects [such as sound effects, scene changes, special effects, etc.] that are conventionally hidden from the audience. This production style allows the audience literally to look beneath the surface of the play, and enter the shared imaginative world of the production through doors that are usually closed. FLYING SWINE recognizes the need to be energetically engaged with our community. Outreach programs will be established with local and regional educational institutions, apprentice/intern programs will foster the emerging artists of tomorrow, The Fledgling Piglet will provide children's programming, and volunteer programs will provide an opportunity for interested individuals and groups to participate in the growth of Beacon's cultural spirit.
